Jon Ruben confessed to 17 criminal counts at the courthouse on Friday

A person who laced sweets with tranquilliser and provided them to youngsters at a summer program in the area has admitted sexual offences against two young males both nine and ten years old.

The accused was arrested after eight minors and an older person became sick at Stathern Lodge in mid-summer.

The 76-year-old, from the Nottinghamshire area, confessed to a total of 17 charges when he appeared at the courthouse on recently.

However, he denied one particular crime he was facing, which was concerning a nine-year-old boy.

The defendant was held in detention ahead of a additional proceeding on late November.

'Sweet game'

Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, described Ruben's offending to the court.

She stated his victims were disadvantaged youngsters who were attending a youth camp which he operated.

The defendant played a "treat game" with the minors, the legal counsel said, in which he would enter the sleeping quarters when they were settling down and ask them to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She stated to the judge the man had played this game with the boys "for many years", and minors had previously fallen ill the following morning.

She said the defendant had been successful in rationalizing this for many years as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepchild had concerns in summer 2025.

The legal representative added: "Recently" his family member had suspicions about the activities, with valid cause.

"They resolved" to have a look in the defendant's belongings."

The prosecutor said materials including lubricant, petroleum jelly and syringes were found, and his stepson contacted the law enforcement about his worries.

She said the defendant proceeded to play the "treat game" with six children that time - July 26th - and they were everyone unwell the subsequent day.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that stage," she continued.

The oversight body, the police conduct office, previously told that it was examining the police response of the incident.

The legal representative stated the children were having difficulty walking due to their sickness, so the stepson contacted the law enforcement a second time.

She explained the man then conducted the "candy game" in a area of five children.
