Powerful Winds Cause Numerous Homes Without Power in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals urged to remain inside as strong winds batter the nation.

Severe winds hitting speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 properties lacking electricity and compelled officials to call off more than 100 aircraft departures, as reported by regional news sources.

The gales are influencing the complete southern region and southern sections of the northern region, as stated by the national weather agency.

New Zealand authorities have released rare severe gust advisories - the top caution category - in central regions including Wellington and Canterbury.

Locals have been advised to stay indoors, avoid travel, and get ready for more electricity and network failures.

Broad Damage and Emergency Response

The electricity loss seems to be impacting residences mostly in the South Island, although agencies state that the electricity supply was being restored progressively.

Local media have stated that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, whereas power lines and trees have been knocked down by the gusts.

Across Wellington, a individual was killed after being struck by a wooden fragment at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a woman was blown onto approaching vehicles on a thoroughfare by a powerful blast, in a moment that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Flights in and out of the city have been suspended as a result of the weather, while some roads and libraries are not operating.

At the same time Canterbury officials have declared a emergency situation, to facilitate recovery activities.

Work Stoppages Alongside Severe Weather

The powerful gales on today coincide with many of school staff, physicians and civil servants are participating in what has been described as a "mega strike", demanding better pay and working conditions.

But the intense climate has compelled them to modify certain arrangements, with various open-air gatherings relocated inside or cancelled.

Similar gusts are also sweeping the nearby nation, causing a heatwave to the country's outback.

Authorities have declared burning restrictions for concern about bushfires.
