A shadow market for unlicensed weight-loss medications is propelled by social media fitness personalities and sellers on communication apps, according to recent findings.
Experimental Drug Acquiring Traction Online
Retatrutide, which is still in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning effects. Viewers are urged to contact these accounts directly for source information, while also obtaining discount codes.
Thriving Commerce on Social Networks
Additionally, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share comparison images, injection guides and claims of next-day British shipping. Vendors market the drug there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for purchases.
Understanding The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an investigational injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist patients lose up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Voice Worries
However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to users administering products of unknown origin.
Some experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing cost of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Legal Status and Implementation
Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some content creators try to circumvent the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but advertising and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer laws, risking fines, prosecution or prison.
Service Response and Content Removal
Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic content and banned related keywords and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and investing in strengthening compliance measures.
Digital Trading Operations
Investigations also found communities with up to 9,000 members marketing retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up channels with thousands of members, filled with photos of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed instructions for preparing or administering at home.
Within minutes of entering one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most transactions occur. The seller provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within two days. When questioned whether the product was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. None inquired about weight, health issues or previous experience.
Product Information and Costs
Within these groups, posts display dark colored parcels with postal service stickers, stating to contain new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can choose between powder vials, mixed at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors usually sold at £160 for 20mg. When asked how much time a pen should last, vendors give contradictory responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Safety Actions
A representative for the messaging service said it actively monitored harmful content on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Expert Warnings
“People are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the research behind this drug is valid, these online products may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the surge in interest to recent cost increases for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are using online platforms. But fake treatments are highly dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she said.
Her staff has already encountered individuals injured by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said the doctor. “These materials could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Manufacturer Position
A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any item “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet authorized … may expose users to possibly serious health risks”.
